ATTENTION ALL UNION MEMBERSLocal 251 has extended an invitation to each member of City Council to attend our up coming meeting on February 26, 2019. Local 251 leadership has brought the numerous and ongoing issues in the Street Maintenance Department to the attention of City Council. We want our members to have the opportunity to speak freely to City Council members in an environment that they can best communicate the ongoing issues they see and live.
Please contact your City Council Representative and ask them to come speak with our membership. We need a strong showing of solidarity for our guests so we need every member that can attend to please be there. The meeting is on February 26, 2019 at 5:00 pm at 8946 L St. Omaha, NE 68127. I hope to see you there. We may have lost this battle but we have not lost the war. There is an ongoing investigation into why the Street Maintenance Department is having problems not only hiring people, but why they are unable to retain people and why so many of them are being disciplined. We must not be afraid to speak up and stand together. People need to set aside the fear of retaliation if we want things to change.
Being a public employee’s means that you have the opportunity to affect a real change. We get the opportunity to elect our bosses. We need to stand together and use that power. Every one of our members has the power to make Local 251 a more effective fighter for workplace rights and justice by educating yourselves, being the “eyes and ears” of the workers, showing solidarity and being involved. This week showed that we are not afraid to stand up and to fight for what we believe is right. You can choose not to keep informed about union issues and not to participate or we can all stand together and stand up for what is best our union brothers and sisters. Resolution 2019-18 is back on the City Council Agenda to allow the City of Omaha Public Works Department to hire outside contractors to repair potholes in the city. We need all of our members to contact their City Council Members and let them know you oppose this resolution. The City of Omaha needs to fill the vacant positions and use the employees that we have before resorting to hiring outside contractors.
